Pittyvaich — History & notes
Pittyvaich was established in 1975 by Arthur Bell and Sons, positioned adjacent to the Dufftown distillery in Moray. Designed primarily to provide malt for Bell's blends, the facility began with two stills, eventually expanding to four. Ownership shifted through corporate acquisitions, moving to Guinness in 1985 and DCL in 1986, which eventually became United Distillers. Despite its utility, the site suffered from excess capacity within the industry portfolio. Consequently, the distillery closed in 1993 after operating for only eighteen years. The physical structures were eventually demolished in 2002, leaving behind a limited legacy of spirit.
Due to its short operational life, Pittyvaich is characterized as a specialist spirit. The output was noted for its distinctive estery top notes, which provided a specific profile suitable for large scale blending requirements. The character is often described as possessing nutty and spicy qualities. While the majority of the liquid was consumed in blends, occasional official releases have emerged to represent the distillery's house style. These bottlings serve as a finite record of a distillery that existed for less than two decades in the heart of Speyside, now permanently lost to the industry following its demolition.
Flavour profile
