North of Scotland was established in 1957 by George Christie, who converted the former Forth brewery site in Alloa for whisky production. Due to local planning restrictions regarding roof height, the distillery's three patent stills, which processed approximately 2700 liters of wash per hour, had to be installed inside pits to accommodate the columns. While the site briefly operated a two-pot malt distillery named Strathmore, these stills were removed in 1959 to facilitate an expansion of grain production. The facility continued operating until it was silenced by DCL in 1980, followed by the removal of equipment in 1982.

The distillate produced at the Alloa site was intended to retain specific congeners suitable for long-term maturation, though documented tasting notes from original production remain scarce. While the distillery shared a name with an unrelated site in Aberdeen, its identity is firmly tied to its specific technical configuration in the Forth valley. Today, while the production equipment has long been removed, the physical buildings remain on-site, serving as warehouse space. The legacy of the liquid survives primarily through aged single grain stocks that have gained recognition decades after the distillery’s closure.
