Ladyburn — History & notes
Established by William Grant in 1966, Ladyburn operated within the Girvan grain complex in Ayrshire. Equipped with four stills, its primary purpose was to supply malt for Grant's blends, which allowed Glenfiddich to be marketed more effectively as a single malt. The distillery's operational life was notably brief; it was dismantled in 1975 to facilitate the expansion of the surrounding grain facility. Although the parent Girvan site remains active, Ladyburn is distinct from the later Ailsa Bay distillery established in 2007. Its legacy survives through rare remaining stocks of historic liquid.
The short existence of Ladyburn makes its single malt highly regarded among collectors of lost distilleries. Because it was integrated into a larger grain complex rather than functioning as a standalone heritage site, the physical infrastructure no longer exists. Current research verifies that while the spirit profile is categorized as delicate and floral, documented releases remain exceptionally scarce. The production period was limited to less than a decade, meaning all genuine Ladyburn liquid originates from a very narrow window of distillation between 1966 and 1975, predating modern industrial changes at the site.
Flavour profile
The spirit is characterized by a delicate and floral profile, featuring prominent lemon notes and a crisp finish.
Bottlings & collector track record
- Ladyburn Edition One: Distilled in 1966 and aged for 54 years in sherry butt number 102095, this release features David Bailey photography and consists of 210 numbered bottles.
- Historic Independent and Official Releases: Because the distillery was dismantled in 1975, verified historic liquid is distinct from modern Ailsa Bay labels. Bottlings typically represent vintage stocks from the 1966-1975 production window.
