Kinclaith

Kinclaith was established in 1957 within the existing Strathclyde grain distillery complex on the south bank of Glasgow's River Clyde. The parent site, originally a cotton mill, had been producing grain spirit since 1927. Following the acquisition by Schenley in 1956, Seager Evans installed two pot stills to produce malt whisky for blending. This made Kinclaith a rare post-war malt distillery located entirely within an industrial grain facility. Its operational life was brief, spanning only eighteen years before corporate restructuring led to its permanent closure and the removal of its distillation equipment to facilitate grain spirit expansion.

The distillery ceased operations in 1975 following the acquisition of the site by Whitbread. To accommodate the increasing demand for grain and neutral spirits, the Kinclaith pot stills were dismantled. While the broader Strathclyde site continues to function today as a major grain distillery under Chivas Brothers, the specific malt production infrastructure of Kinclaith no longer exists. Because the distillery was primarily focused on providing malt for blends, official single malt bottlings were never released during its operational period. Extant stocks are extremely limited, consisting solely of independent releases that preserve the legacy of this lost Glasgow Lowland malt.
