Inverleven — History & notes
Established in 1938 by Hiram Walker, Inverleven was a dedicated two-pot-still malt distillery housed within the sprawling Dumbarton grain complex. Its primary purpose was to supply Lowland malt whisky for the Ballantine's blend. In 1956, the site expanded with a Lomond spirit still, which shared a wash still with the main plant but produced a distinct whisky known as Lomond malt. While Inverleven's output ceased in 1991, the Dumbarton site continued grain production until 2002. The distillery buildings were eventually demolished to make way for residential housing, marking the end of its physical footprint in Scotland.
The physical legacy of Inverleven moved beyond its original site after closure. In 2005, the conventional pot stills were acquired by Bruichladdich, though they did not produce whisky there. These stills were eventually moved to the Waterford distillery in Ireland in 2015. Notably, the separate Lomond still found a different purpose, being repurposed for gin production at Bruichladdich. Because the distillery was primarily designed for blending requirements rather than single malt marketing, official bottlings are scarce. The historical liquid remains accessible mainly through rare independent releases and specialized commemorative bottlings from recent decades.

A verified house tasting profile cannot be reliably reconstructed because there is no consistent documentation of official tasting notes. It is crucial not to confuse Inverleven's output with the distinct Lomond malt produced on the separate Lomond still at the same site, as the two spirits were intentionally different.
