Glencraig

Glencraig represents a specific production era at the Glenburgie site in Moray rather than a standalone distillery. Named after production director Willie Craig, it was established in 1958 when Hiram Walker installed two Lomond stills. These specialized vessels featured rectifying plates and adjustable lyne arms, allowing distillers to manipulate reflux and heavy oils. This technical flexibility was designed to produce distinct blending malt for Ballantine's Finest without the logistical burden of constructing a separate site. Despite its Speyside location, the spirit was a unique variant within the Glenburgie facility, which remains active today under Chivas Brothers ownership.

Production of Glencraig ceased in 1981. The primary reason for decommissioning the Lomond stills was the operational difficulty associated with cleaning the internal rectifying plates, which proved labor-intensive compared to traditional copper pot stills. While the Glenburgie site underwent a complete rebuild in 2004, the Glencraig spirit exists only as maturing stock from the original 1958-1981 period. As no standalone Glencraig buildings ever existed, the legacy of this experiment survives solely through rare vintage releases from independent bottlers. The site remains a vital component of Speyside production, though it no longer utilizes the adjustable still technology for this specific brand.
