Convalmore — History & notes
Founded in 1893-94 as the fourth of the traditional seven distilleries in Dufftown, Convalmore initially supplied blends for James Buchanan and Lowrie. Following a fire in 1909 and its 1910 reopening, the site hosted a bold technological experiment: a continuous all-malt still operated alongside two pot stills. This unusual setup was abandoned by 1915. Later acquired by DCL in 1925, the facility underwent significant expansion in 1964, increasing to four pot stills and adding a dark grains plant. It eventually closed in 1985, with its remaining buildings repurposed by William Grant and Sons for warehousing near Balvenie.
Though the production equipment has been removed, the character of Convalmore survives through intermittent historic releases. The spirit is noted for a distinctive waxy texture and fruity complexity. While earlier production focused on blending requirements, later Special Releases have revealed a sophisticated profile characterized by tropical fruit notes. These official bottlings represent a rare opportunity to taste the output of a lost Speyside site that sat geographically between its famous neighbors, Glenfiddich and Balvenie. The surviving original buildings stand as a quiet reminder of Dufftown's Victorian distilling boom and subsequent twentieth-century industrial shifts.
Flavour profile
Distinguished by a waxy mouthfeel and evolving tropical fruit notes in mature releases.
