    Caperdonich — History & notes

Founded in 1898 in Rothes, Caperdonich was originally established as Glen Grant No. 2, located directly across the road from its parent site. Following an early closure in 1902, the facility functioned only as a maltings and warehouse for decades. It reopened in 1965, expanding from two to four stills in 1967. Although it adopted the name Caperdonich in 1977 and utilized Glen Grant shaped stills by 1985, the liquid remained a distinct whisky. The site was acquired by Pernod Ricard in 2001, closed in 2002, and eventually demolished in 2011 after Forsyths purchased the site.

The production history of Caperdonich is defined by two distinct styles: traditional unpeated and rare peated variants. While the distillery no longer exists, recent releases under the Secret Speyside collection have brought these historic liquids back to the market. Unpeated expressions are noted for their light, floral character with orchard fruit notes, whereas peated vintages from specific eras like 1997 represent a different side of the distillery's output. Because the site is demolished, all remaining stock is finite, representing a closed chapter of Speyside distilling heritage characterized by these contrasting flavor profiles.

    Flavour profile

The historic unpeated style is characterized by a light, floral profile featuring pear, creaminess, and mint. Modern releases confirm orchard fruit notes in aged expressions, while peated 1997 vintages provide a distinct smoky contrast.

    Bottlings & collector track record

    • Caperdonich 21 Year Old (Unpeated): A 48% ABV expression from the Secret Speyside collection launched in 2019, showcasing the distillery's unpeated orchard fruit character.
    • Caperdonich 1997 Vintage (Peated): Rare evidence of the distillery's peated production period, released as part of the Secret Speyside range to distinguish it from the light floral historic style.
