Caledonian

Founded by Graham Menzies in 1855 on a five-acre site at Dalry Road, Haymarket, Caledonian stood as a massive pillar of Edinburgh distilling. By 1856, it secured a 41.5% allocation among six major distillers, marking its industrial dominance. The site was notable for its original Coffey still and a monumental chimney reaching approximately 300 feet. While primarily a grain plant, it integrated two pot stills in 1867 to produce Irish-style grain whisky until roughly 1900. After joining DCL in 1884, it remained a central producer until its permanent closure in 1988, eventually being converted into residential flats a decade later.

Distinction must be drawn regarding Caledonian's output; despite the historic use of pot stills, the liquid remains classified as Lowland single grain, not malt. The distillery's legacy is preserved through sparse official and independent releases, as the buildings were converted into flats by 1998. The vast majority of its production was destined for blending, serving the massive requirements of the DCL portfolio throughout the 20th century. Its survival as a single grain brand is rare, with the most notable modern recognition coming decades after the stills were silenced.
