Life & career
Rachel Barrie studied chemistry in Edinburgh and joined the Scotch Whisky Research Institute in 1991, where she learned to read spirit in the laboratory before she learned to blend it. That analytical background still shapes her work: she describes whisky in terms of structure and texture as much as aroma.
She went on to shape spirit at Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, then at Bowmore, Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch, and since 2017 has been master blender for The GlenDronach, Benriach and Glenglassaugh. Working three very different houses at once — sherry-driven, smoke-and-triple-distillation, coastal — she has become known for pushing each one further into its own character rather than smoothing them towards a common style.
