Life & career
Jim McEwan started at Bowmore on Islay in 1963, aged fifteen, as a cooper's apprentice. Over the next three decades he worked through warehousing, blending and management, ending up as Bowmore's distillery manager and then as a globe-trotting ambassador who taught tasting on five continents.
In 2001 he joined a small group that bought the mothballed Bruichladdich and restarted it with second-hand equipment and radical ideas: no chill-filtering, terroir-driven barley, unusual cask finishes, and a transparency about production that the industry then avoided. He created the heavily peated Port Charlotte and Octomore lines, the experimental Black Art series, and The Botanist gin, before retiring in 2015 and later helping launch Ardnahoe.
