What is Spirit of Speyside

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival is an annual celebration of malt whisky that doesn't take place in a single venue but across the entire Speyside region – in dozens of distilleries, hotels, pubs, halls and outdoor locations.

The 2026 festival runs from 29 April to 4 May and will offer more than 600 events, from masterclasses and special tours to experiential excursions.

A Brief History of the Festival

The festival was founded in 1999 as a regional event designed to connect Speyside distilleries and showcase their wealth to the world in a concentrated form over one week.

It has since grown into one of the world's largest whisky events, attracting visitors from more than 35 countries every year.

From modest beginnings the programme has expanded to over 500–600 whisky-inspired events, meaning that at any hour of the day several different activities are taking place somewhere in the region.

The festival also makes a significant contribution to the local economy – in recent years its impact has been estimated at over £2.2 million annually.

The Atmosphere: More Than Just Drams

The official slogan can be loosely translated as "meet the makers, taste rare drams and discover the stories behind Scotch whisky" – and that is exactly what Spirit of Speyside is about.

How the Festival Works

Spirit of Speyside is not a "festival in a tent" but a network of hundreds of events spread across the entire region – from Elgin in the north to Kingussie in the south, from Keith in the east to Forres in the west.

Each distillery, hotel, bar or local partner prepares its own programme – from classic tours to unique events that only take place during the festival (e.g. opening normally inaccessible distilleries or warehouses).

The programme is published in advance in an online catalogue (the Programme Preview) so visitors can build their own itinerary; in 2026 the preview was announced as early as February.

Ticket sales then open via an online system – for popular events (rare tastings, special tours, limited bottlings) tickets sell out within hours.

Programme 2026: Grand Opening and First Days

The 2026 festival kicks off on 29 April with a series of opening events across Speyside, including the official industry dinner and the first masterclasses.

From day one you can expect quieter tastings at smaller distilleries as well as large social events where the local whisky community rubs shoulders with Master Blenders.

Tastings, Tours and Behind the Scenes

The core of the programme consists of tastings at more than fifty distilleries and partner venues across Speyside – classic and extended tours, warehouse tastings, single-cask samples and special festival editions.

A large part of the programme also features events where normally closed distilleries open their doors for a few days, or allow a glimpse into warehouses and production areas that tourists usually never see.

Themed tastings focused on maturation, specific styles or vintages are also part of the offering – for example Murray McDavid programmes that showcase different maturation styles in the iconic Coleburn Distillery warehouses and let you bottle your own whisky straight from the cask.

Similarly, The GlenAllachie prepares warehouse tastings and blending masterclasses led by their Master Blender, Billy Walker.

Whisky & Food, Music and Ceilidh

The festival is also a gastronomic experience: whisky-pairing dinners, brunches, BBQs and tastings of local produce are a regular part of the programme.

Live music accompanies almost every evening – from traditional Scottish bands to local folk and jazz in pubs and hotel halls.

The highlight of the social programme is the grand ceilidh at Craigellachie Distillery – a traditional Scottish dance evening under the open sky that is for many the heart of the whole week.

Music, dancing, laughter and plenty of Speyside drams – and if you have never been to a ceilidh, this is the perfect time to change that.

The Dram Tram and More

The Dram Tram is the legendary festival train that runs along the historic line between Dufftown and Keith, with whisky tastings taking place right in the carriage.

The golden carriage with views of the Speyside countryside is one of the most photogenic experiences of the festival.

The festival also offers outdoor activities – seaside trips, canoe expeditions, wildlife walks and picnic whisky tastings in nature.

Ideal for those who do not want to spend the entire week in distillery visitor centres but want to discover the landscape where whisky is born.

Whisky School 2026

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky School is a three-and-a-half-day intensive programme for those who want to understand whisky in depth – from production to sensory science.

It runs as a series of workshops led by industry experts covering historical and technological details, the sensory science of whisky and practical skills.

Thematic blocks cover the full whisky journey: from Barley to Wash through milling, mashing and fermentation to sensory training and cask maturation.

The programme includes visits to maltings, distilleries (e.g. Aultmore) and evening dinners with participants and lecturers – an ideal setting for networking within the community.

Coopering, Casks and Warehouse Work

Coopering masterclasses are among the most popular hands-on activities at the festival – you will learn how a whisky cask is made and repaired.

A workshop at Dallas Dhu Distillery lets you build your own cask from scratch under the guidance of an experienced cooper.

At Coleburn Distillery you can get involved in warehouse work – moving casks (re-racking), sampling and hands-on experience with whisky maturation.

You will leave with a certificate, tired hands and a flight of carefully selected drams tasted straight from the cask.

Who is Spirit of Speyside 2026 For

The festival is designed to appeal to complete beginners as well as experienced collectors and connoisseurs.

Many events are suitable for mixed groups – partners, friends or families – because the programme includes not only whisky but also food, music and nature.

For whisky geeks there is the Whisky School, technical tours, single-cask tastings and expert masterclasses.

For the more social visitors there are trips, music, ceilidh and food-pairing events where whisky is more of a backdrop than the main theme.
